National Senior Independence Month

National Senior Independence Month

February is National Senior Independence Month, a time when senior citizens and community members come together to share resources that help them live longer and more independent lives. As we age, we inevitably become more reliant on the people around us. This doesn’t mean we still can’t live an independent life with the help of local senior centers and retirement organizations. Encouraging older adults to engage with these resources can allow them to live with higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction.

While we may know how to provide a self-sufficient environment for our elder members at home, there are many things we, as a community, can do to ensure every senior citizen is provided the same opportunity. Small changes to infrastructure, such as adding elevators and ramps, are simple steps to improve quality of life. Although mastering new gadgets and technology can be challenging, with some help and the right information, they can help the elderly look for information, manage their assets, and stay in touch with loved ones. As we continue through this month, let us be mindful of how we can help our seniors live independent and happy lives.
