October is Residents’ Rights Month; an annual event to recognize and honor residents living in long term care facilities and consumers receiving services in their home or community. The federal Nursing Home Reform Law guarantees residents’ rights and places a strong emphasis on individual dignity, choice, and self-determination. Celebration of Residents’ Rights Month provides an opportunity to pause, highlight and celebrate, respect and acknowledge the value of each resident.
This year’s theme “Reclaiming My Rights, My Home, My Life” was selected to highlight the need for residents’ rights to be recognized, recovered, and reasserted. The theme emphasizes the recognition of the long term care facility as the residents’ home, and the importance of residents reclaiming their own lives.
