COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hurricane season is upon us in South Carolina and the Senior P.R.E.P. (Planning and Resources for Emergency Preparedness) program is coming to Walgreens in Georgetown County to help older adults prepare for the threat.

The Senior P.R.E.P. program is a valuable resource that offers emergency planning assistance to senior citizens throughout South Carolina. Taking precautionary measures beforehand is crucial to safeguard vulnerable older adults during emergencies.

Brandon Ellis, Director of Georgetown County Emergency Services, will speak on the importance of planning for Hurricanes, and Mandy Halloran, Director of Public Health and Disability Integration from Able South Carolina, speak on those with special needs and disabilities and the importance of having a plan in place.

On August 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Walgreens at 11 N. Causeway Road in Pawleys Island, SC 29585 will host its sixth Senior P.R.E.P. event in partnership with the South Carolina Department on Aging, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, and Walgreens. Several partner agencies will also be in attendance to discuss the importance of emergency planning and provide information.

Emergency materials will be available for seniors and the community.

Everyone can take steps now to prepare for emergencies.

Things to Consider:

· Plan with family, friends, and caregivers to assist with limitations.

· Include necessary assistive technology and medical supplies (i.e., oxygen tank) in your emergency kit.

· Have a plan or backup resource to power essential medical equipment.

· Check with any agency providing you services for special provisions in an emergency.

· Have clear and concise instructions for rescue personnel regarding special needs or equipment.

· Map out accessible emergency exits at home and work.

· Consider getting a medical alert system that can be used to call for help.
