The mission of the SCVAGAL Program is to advocate for the best interests of abused, neglected, or exploited vulnerable adults in the South Carolina Family Court System. We serve all counties in South Carolina.
In 2015 in South Carolina, there were over 4,900 reports received of vulnerable adults being abused, neglected or exploited. Many of these reports resulted in court proceedings. The SC Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem Program recruits volunteer Guardians ad Litem to act as an unbiased representative for vulnerable adults under Adult Protective Services custody in cases of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
SCVAGAL volunteers receive training by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging. After completing the training, volunteers are responsible for gathering information, interviewing the vulnerable adult and other involved parties and making recommendations to the court as to what is in the best interest of the vulnerable adult. Volunteers are court appointed and appear in court on behalf of the vulnerable adult. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please complete our Volunteer Application.
